While the car made it across, now we have a new process of settling in and learning about our community. Our house has no furniture. All week we have shared one camping spork and towel. Last night Simons mother, Jennifer, brought us some towels, camping chairs, and kitchen supplies. Today, Simon left for Minnesota. Monday I leave for Arizona. The following week relocation resumes with a drive from Tucson to Arcata in a moving truck....
The mechanic here in Arcata diagnosed my cars engine as in great shape, no problems, and well maintained... Although it needs a new catalytic converter to pass emissions.

State #10: California!!!!
We made it out of Reno and into our new "home state." Now we have to hope the car can make it through the Sierra Nevadas.
Where at night Reno is garish and vibrant, in the morning it's drab and depressing. The drab buildings without their flashing lights are flat an dull against the vast tan desert behind them. The streets are quiet and lonely and the whole place has a "the morning after" feel to it.
About 375 miles to go.
About 375 miles to go.
Last stop
Despite being weighed down by the terrible buffet, we pushed through the gastronomic unease and arrive in Reno around midnight. It's our last stop before Arcata. And it's like Vegas without the pretend allure of high rollers and luxury. Just the depressing sight of the elderly feeding their social security into a slot machine as they alternate between drags of a cigarette and hits from their portable oxygen tank. But for $30 the price is right.

Poor choice
Casino buffet just over the NV border was a poor choice for a late lunch. It might have been the best one available though.
State #8: Utah
We made it through Wyoming! Now we can hope the car makes it through the mountains... We are still hoping to reach Reno tonight.
Wyoming
What time is it?

The storm abated after providing some spectacular lightning and a stunning gap between the overhanging clouds and the horizon through which the sunset peeked.
With literally no hotel rooms available in Rawlins, Wyoming, we're forced to stop a hundred miles sooner in Laramie. If there were anything worth photographing near the Ramada Inn, we would, but absent that, we'll just go to bed.

State #7 Wyoming
We made it through Nebraska! We look forward to cooling temperatures (80 degrees) and a lightning show as we head into a rain storm..
Where bad beef comes from
Driving across Nebraska we passed plenty of pastures with cows with room to graze and the occasional tree to hide under. Then we passed cow Abu Ghraib. Brought to you by McDonalds.
Lunch
The engine light seems to be an emissions and not a performance issue so we continue west. But first, lunch at a El Portal, a not terrible Mexican place in Nebraska City.
